Samhain (pronounced Sow-win) is not only the beginning of Winter, it is also the Pagan New Year. It is the time when death is all around us in nature, the land is barren, the leaves are falling from the trees. It is also the time when farmers would slaughter their cattle and preserve the meat to last them through the winter months.
In Wicca, on Samhain, the God of light descends into the underworld, opening the doorway to the spirit world. Samhain is a time to remember loved ones we have lost and also to give thanks to our ancestors, it is a time of endings but also a time for new beginnings.
