New Year, Full Moon, and Self Care

As we gently settle into the new year, the first full Moon of the year will light up the skies over the UK on 3rd January, offering a beautiful moment of pause and reflection after the busy festive season. This lunar event arrives just as many of us are navigating the post-Christmas lull, when energy can dip and routines are still finding their rhythm again.

This full Moon is traditionally known as the Wolf Moon, a name that comes from ancient times when wolves were often heard howling during the long, quiet winter nights. Symbolically, it’s a Moon that invites us to listen inwardly — to our instincts, our needs, and the quieter messages our bodies and minds may be sending after weeks of activity, indulgence and socialising.

Adding to its magic, this January Moon is also the fourth supermoon in a row, following October’s Harvest Moon, November’s Beaver Moon and December’s Cold Moon. A supermoon appears larger and brighter in the sky, reminding us that even in the depths of winter there is still beauty, light and a sense of wonder to be found — sometimes simply by stepping outside and looking up.

Weather permitting, clear skies could make this a truly uplifting sight, arriving just as fairy lights are being packed away and the decorations come down. It can be a lovely moment to wrap up warm, take a few slow breaths, and enjoy a sense of calm and connection with nature — something that can be incredibly grounding for our wellbeing.

From a holistic perspective, the full Moon is often associated with release and renewal. It’s a wonderful time to let go of what no longer serves you — whether that’s lingering fatigue, old habits, or emotional clutter — and to set gentle intentions for the weeks ahead. You might choose to journal, meditate, enjoy a relaxing bath, or simply rest more deeply, allowing yourself permission to slow down.

If you miss this Moon, don’t worry — there will be plenty more lunar moments to enjoy throughout the year. However, the next time the Moon will appear quite so large and bright won’t be until November. There’s also something special to look forward to later in the year, as May 2026 will bring two full Moons, making it a rare year with 13 full Moons instead of the usual 12.

Whether you view the Moon as a spiritual symbol or simply a natural wonder, it offers a gentle reminder to care for yourself, honour the seasons, and move into the new year with kindness, balance and intention.
